Advertising Mechanical Requirements

Thank you for considering the only specialty publications targeted towards the active railroad or model airplane hobbyist! Our magazines are electronically produced and printed on a web offset press, which means that we have specific requirements for accepting adveriting materials. All advertising must be submitted in an electronic format. Please take the time to review these requirements before submitting any materials to us, as iregularities in your files could result in delays and missed deadlines. As always, if you have any questions, please the Advertising Department for assistance.

Please understand the publisher reserves the right to reject or cancel any advertising which is not in keeping with publication standards. Advertisers and their advertising agencies will assume liability for all contents including text, representation and illustrations of advertising printed and also assume responsibility for any claims arising therefrom against the publisher. The publisher reserves the right to place the word “advertisement” with any ad which, in the publisher’s opinion, resembles editorial matter. All advertising insertion orders and contracts are subject to approval of the publisher.

Acceptible Fille Formats: Our production is based on Windows-based computers. While computer graphics can be generated in a number of programs, we prefer to use files that are most compatible with our electronic publishing systems. Please contact the Advertising department for compatibility details before submitting files.

Any copy to be set and photos and illustrations requiring scanning, extra or unusual production work will be charged at cost. This includes excessive alterations and revisions, late corrections and additions and other work as necessary. Ads supplied electronically may be subject to charges if major alterations are needed to correctly output files. Agency commission not allowed on production services.

Minimum recommended type size is 5-point. Avoid blocks of small-sized reversed ("knockout") type. Reasonable font matches will be made when fonts are not supplied. Please convert all fonts to outlines or flatten images before submitting. Please keep all "live matter" at least 1/4” inside trim lines. Bleeds should extend at least 1/4” beyond the trim line.

Color Ads: Acceptable file formats include TIFF, JPG, and PDF. All color TIFF files must be submitted in CMYK format, at 300dpi, with all layers flattened. All color JPG files must be submitted in CMYK format, at 300dpi. All color PDF or EPS files must be submitted in CMYK format, at a minimum 300dpi, with all fonts embedded or converted to outlines. To help with color guidance and layout, please submit a hard copy color proof with your ad materials. Please note that any ads submitted with PANTONE® spot colors or RGB color will be converted to four-color CMYK, causing noticable color shift. Please check your files before submitting.

Black and White Ads: Acceptable file formats include TIFF, JPG, and PDF. Black and white TIFF files must be submitted in "grayscale" format, at 300dpi, with all layers flattened. All black and white JPG files must be submitted in "grayscale" format, at 300dpi. All black and white PDF or EPS files must be submitted in "grayscale" format, at a minimum 300dpi, with all fonts embedded or converted to outlines. Please submit a hard copy layout proof with your ad materials.

We cannot accept GIF, BMP, or PNG files for reproduction. We also cannot use any artwork from the Internet, as web site files are low resolution by nature and are not meant for print.

Submitting Digital Files to Carstens : We can accept electronic ad files mailed to us on disc (CD-ROM), by email, or uploaded to our FTP server. You must also supply a hardcopy printout of your ad, either faxed or mailed to our office address. Our mailing address is Carstens Publications, 108 Phil Hardin Road, Newton, NJ 07860. Please also indicate on the envelope which magazine your ad is intended for. All color ads should be accompanied by a hard copy color proof. Large files supplied via email or FTP should be compressed using a recognized compression utility (files generated with either a .ZIP or .SIT extension). Emailed material should be broken up into seperate items with a maximum recommended email attachment of 2 MB each. Please contact the Advertising Department for detailed FTP instructions.
