Garden railways are what we do. Indeed Garden Rail is the only British magazine covering all aspects of outdoor model railways, and the only related magazine worldwide, that publishes monthly. Appearing regularly twelve times a year, it thus provides a comprehensive and up-to-date overview, not only of the developments within the model trade, but also the seasonal joys of the garden.

More and more people are recognising that building a model railway in the garden is one of the most satisfying and diverse hobbies it is possible to find. An outdoor railway in a pleasing garden setting can be an activity involving all the family, as well as a joy to contemplate. Sheer delight is provided by the sight, sound and smell of a ‘live’ steam engine trundling through the rockery; a train at night, lights in coaches, gliding to a halt at a station platform; or a diesel locomotive, complete with sound unit, working hard against the grade at the head of a long freight…

Garden Rail is aimed at established ‘converts’ to the hobby, as well as those yet to desert their indoor layouts and discover the real potential of large-scale modelling in an outdoor setting.

Published six times a year, Narrow Gauge World has rapidly established an international reputation. Readers appreciate the impressive use of colour, top-quality photographs and ‘broad-brush’ approach. Narrow Gauge World has filled a gap in the market by bringing together news, views and features that could not easily be accessed elsewhere. Appealing to the railway enthusiast, photographer and traveller, the wealth of accurate detail in
Narrow Gauge World means that it is also increasingly purchased by modellers – who have their own section in the magazine. Narrow gauge railways are benefiting from the continuing growth in the nostalgia and leisure markets – and so to is Narrow Gauge World
.

European Railways, published twice a year, is devoted to all aspects of the European railway scene. The European Railways ‘special’ is a potent blend of nostalgia and current affairs, with geographical coverage extending from the Atlantic to the Urals (and occasionally beyond!). A substantial proportion of its pages are targeted specifically at modelers. Presented concisely in a fresh entertaining format, it is a valuable resource for prototype and modeling information.

Live Steam Workshop » Tag Gorton

There is an increasing range of live steam models from a number of manufacturers and the most popular of these can nowadays offer well-made locomotives from a price level that is attracting ever more newcomers to this delightful hobby. While attractive, powerful and reliable these less expensive models will generally however, come with a comparatively basic level of detail. This book will help the new locomotive driver to improve their model both cosmetically and functionally, often using inexpensive engineer designed third-party add-ons. The accent here is on simplicity and the book is designed for the average railway modeller rather than the model engineer. These suggestions and ideas can be also used with equal success on the generic models higher up the respective ranges of the various suppliers.

Not only this but sources are provided for tools, spares and materials, such as glues, oils and greases. This easily searchable work is set to become an abiding reference source for the practical G-scale modeller who wishes to keep his track powered railway in tip-top condition both for maximum running pleasure and to protect the resale price of what actually is quite a significant investment...

Mainlines In Modest Spaces » Iain Rice

The second in the layout design series from Atlantic Publishers by Iain Rice. This volume sets out to present a case for the modeller whose inspiration is the grandeur, drama and excitement of mainline operations but is put off thinking that large amounts of space are required. The author creates a series of inspirational examples, in the style we have come to enjoy and appreciate, which provide a selection of approaches set out in spaces, while not all necessarily small, are not beyond many aspiring railway modellers.

The plans and musings presented in this volume are a mix of nostalgia and pragmatism which should prove inspirational for those modellers less spatially challenged!
